This goes with the last question I asked...
If I take my red eared sliders outside, is there a risk of them getting parasites or any other risks?
Absolutly. You would be best to get a small kiddie pool, and put them in there, where they can't get to any unknown plants or bugs. You don't want them eating anything from outside, you have no idea where it has been or what it has been sprayed with.
Reply:Yes parasites is a definite possibility internal or external. If you do this it should be highly controlled and observed for possible methods of infection.
Reply:are you taking him to "play". my vet recommended it. he did give me some warnings. don't leave in a small container of water on a hot day. the water gets too hot and could kill them. OR a bird could come along and snatch the turtle up if left unattended.(depending on size of turt) they move quick and if they are small, they could get lost from you, so keep a close eye.
Reply:In my experience, the benefits outweigh the possibility of parasites. They are wild critters, fit to live in the wild. If parasites become an issue, you can treat them for it.
I keep all my turtles outside, and it has never really become an issue.
They have done drastically better than any turtles I kept inside, either at home, or at the science center I used to work at.
