How is and should i Slider pitch in baseball move?

You watch major leaguers throw and its exactly like a fastball but breaks only about 6 inches across and 6 inches down...

I throw a slider that sorta confuses me because i throw it behind the batter and it breaks in across the plate like it has alot of movement. Is this a slurve because of its swooping break or is it a big break slider? I always that MLB pitchers threw cutters but the announcers say its a slider. Should the rotation of the ball to the batter have a O spinning action toward them or a 4 seam rotation side ways? Thanks

Stop playing baseball and take an English class. Slider should have a tight rotation withthe O spinning actin toward the batter.
Reply:it depends what grip you use, as with almost any other pitch, there are many different grips for the slider.

sometimes it looks like fastball rotation, other times, it can get more break when you can see the "dot" (a section of the ball as its coming to the plate that looks like the ball is rotating around that spot)

both are effective, and have their ups and downs

mixing them both in could make you very effective, but it will also be difficult, it is very hard to master both.

keep in mind, it also depends on your arm slot, whether you throw overhand, 3/4s, or sidearm, the pitch will have different movements

i would suggest that you don't have a different arm slot for your slider, make all of your pitches one arm slot to add to the deception, and prevent yourself from tipping off batters
Reply:Sharply down and away from a right-handed batter.
Reply:The slider should break short and away from a right handed hitter if you throw right handed. It should start in the middle of the plate and then break out of the strike zone. The slurve or curve you describe is or would be home run food for a good hitter. Bert Blyleven had the best curve. It broke sharp and he started the pitch up behind the batter's head. It broke across and down. It caused a lot of batters to "step in the bucket". That means to step out of batter's box with your front foot. If your slider or curve doesn't have a sharp break good hitters will tear it up. How old are You? If you are under 18 don't mess with slider. It could wreck your throwing arm.
Reply:What you describe does sound like a slurve. A slider should have the O action, but a real good slider is difficult for a hitter to pick up. It sounds like you aren't throwing your slider hard enough. If it has more velocity it won't break as much but the hitter sees a fastball until the slight break at the end. A slider is only supposed to be a couple miles per hour slower than your fastball. Try throwing it just like a fastball, and right before your release slightly turn your wrist in a curve ball motion, although not that much. Experiment with it but remember to try to throw it with the same arm speed and velocity as your fastball. And yes, be careful you don't throw it too much. It's the opposite of the natural motion your arm should move when throwing. Good Luck.
Reply:Stop watching the pitchers in the majors and get a pitching coach.
