I just bought two baby red ear sliders?

They are so cute and really tiny. I set the up a 10 gallon tank with a place for them to climb out. I have turtle food too. Now im sorta stumped.

Is their anything else i need to do for my turtles? I mean i know to feed them and clean their tank regularly. Anything else?

What kind of special foods do they need?

Oh and i was wondering how much space they need. The lady that was selling them was selling these tiny lagoon things for one to live in. I have two in ten gallons. Is this too many? Could i add more if i plan on upgrading to a 20 gallon in the far away future?

If so how many? Right now their so tiny. Take tour thumb and index finger and make a circle. Thats how tiny.

You should really email me about this. I have one male red eared slider. I have had him for two years at least. I think that the 10 gal is going to be to small pretty soon so you should start looking for 20 gal. Try freecycle that is where I got my 25 gal for free. They need to have a submersible heater and thermometer. it should be around 75 degrees and basking area should be around 85-88 degrees. you should have a screen over the aquarium then on top of it you should have two lights. One light will need to be over the basking area and should be able to hold a 80-100 watt bulb depending on the temperature in your house. in winter i get the 100 watt bulb. you also need a full spectrum light. This keeps your turtle having the sensation of wanting to eat it basically gives your turtle energy. It is like the sun. Tank should not be in a drafty area. Turtles die from living in temps between 66 and 72. The diet is pretty simple the can have earthworms, babyshrimp, lettuce, some plants, NO CITRUS, fruit like apples and bananas, vegetables, commercial diet, Crickets(really good nutrients), COOKED chicken, fish%26lt; my turtle is obsessed with them. Get the baby goldfish maybe 20 of them and they cost like 10 cent. Feed them as much as they can eat in 5 min. but feed them lettuce and plants several times. the water should be high enough that if you put the two turtles together and held them side ways they would be still under water. Make sure they can get on their basking area. I believe the more space they have the happier they are. They will need a big basking spot since both might want to bask at the same time. They will grow to be the size of your hand with your fingers spread. They live long if kept in the appropriate conditions. YOU need a filter and I read that they can eat gravel and they dont like their feet scraping the bottom of the cage so i put nickel and dime sized pebbles all over the bottom of the tank%26lt; it is easier to clean than gravel. if feeding gets too messy feed them in a large crate or bucket filled with water the same temp as their tank then when you are done let them stay in their for a while so they can poop then put them back in the tank and dump the bucket water out.
Reply:You need to report that lady. Its illegal for anyone to sell turtles under 4 inches. Also she is giving wrong information wich will mean slow horrendous death for the poor turtles.

The rule is 10 gallons PER inch of turtle. Those 2 turtles need to be in a 20 gallon long NOW. They need a basking lamp overtop of the land area so they can digest their food, they need a flourescent uvb bulb that emits 5 percent or higher uvb rays so the turtles can absorb calcium. Without that uvb bulb the turtles will develop soft shell and metabolic bone disease and die. Female red ear sliders get 13 inches and male red ear sliders get about 10 inches. They will need HUGE tanks for when they are adults. Turtles are high maitenance and very expensive animals to have.

Reply:ok i have to tell u this, if your turtle eats turtle pelet food then NEAVER give your slider turtle raw chicken BECAUSE your turtle will only want chicken for the rest of there life. and trust me when ur in a hurry and the turtle is hungry thats when u got the problem. (i still have my slider turtle and its 14 years u'll get hooked to them when they get older) : )
Reply:We've had a red eared slider for 10 years. He's grown alot! (3 to 4 times his original size) Ten gallons should be OK for 2 small ones. Once they have doubled in size you may want to get a larger tank. Do you have a heater for the tank? They prefer warm water. Get yourself a good filter and save yourself some work. Water will stay clean much longer...
Reply:I love sliders too! Anyway, the 10 gallon tank is okay for now, but you should plan on a bigger tank in the future. The most important thing for sliders is that they get sun light. They need to bask in the sun to harden the shells. You can get a sun lamp for the tank, that would work or keep them by a window with good sun light. Best environment for a turtle is a large tank with land to crawl on to sun and water to swim in. Have a filter with running water like a water falls in the tank. This will feel like a natural environment to them and they will fair very well. I went as far as building a pond for mine in the yard and kept them there all summer. They were so happy and healthy and got the natural sun they needed. A favorite food for them was earth worms, but they like lettuce too. Good luck with them!
Reply:Il try to make this short and sweet.

Okay. You're a victim of what i call "Suckered into buying cute/illegal turtles". (its illegal to sell a turtle less than 4 inches)

They cannot survive in those "Lagoons". Experiences turtle owners call those "Lagoons" Death Bowls.

Turtles need a basking light. They warm their bodies up with light NOT water. They're reptiles afterall. (get a clamp lamp)

Baby turtles should the water to be 80 degrees Farenheit. The basking area needs to be at around 85-90 F.

You should be feeding them turtle pellets. The small kind. Don't overfeed. Throw in a small piece of lettuce, sooner or later theyll take a bite.

Also PLEASE PLEASE add water conditioner to the water so that you can take out the chlorine and nuetralize heavy metals. Its not healthy for turtles(or any animal) to drink chlorine.

Kinda makes you think you should have researchd the animal before buying it huh?
