What are the small sliders on the edge of the platforms at train stations.?
They are to do with track alignment.
Reply:To show maintaince gangs where to work.
Reply:the other two answerers are way off. the sliders on the edge of platforms that come out when a train comes into the station are used to fill an abnormally sized gap between the train and the platform. If the sliders weren't there, people would have a much greater risk of falling into the gap and injuring themselves or slipping beneath the train and getting killed. the sliders are a great innovation for platforms. One extremely good example of these sliders is in the Times Square-42nd Street subway station, on the Shuttle platforms. When a shuttle to Grand Central arrives, the sliders pop out from the platform before the train doors open, to ensure safety. The reason for the sliders at this station is due to the fact that the platforms are curved, which create larger gaps between the trains and the platform. I hope this has been informative for you.
Reply:Please give more information ans are you referring to the UK or the other side.
Reply:Interesting to note the UK and the USA answers which totally different..

Also I think you need to define what you mean by a "slider"

Usually anything close to the track bed is to do with alignment and in the UK I have never seen anything to "Fill the gap" on curved platforms.

Take your pick.
